 Let's not forget it, Bérenger Saunière is a child of the country. Heis born in a village all close to Rennes-Le-Château, the village of Montazel. During our quest we cannot lack ourselves it to return. Maybe not to make a pilgrimage there, but rather to "impregnate" itself of an odor of the past. Maybe to tempt to see to pass a child with the accent of this beautiful country of Aude and that will make us think about our enigmatic vicar.
Montazel is a village of 462 inhabitants that was a long time, with quite near Espéraza, one of the capitals of the chapellerie.
To surrender to Montazel is simple, it is sufficient to cross Couiza and to head toward Quillan. To close to 500 meters after the exit of Couiza to take the road on your right. Then it is indicated.
When one follows the indicated path one arrives directly on the place of the church. Church that is not without recalling us the one of Rennes-Le-Château. Certainly, it is more imposing and bigger. .
We recover the same features. Same type of apse, same nave, same bell-tower. If a big difference: A porch and an important frontispiece! To this title, besides, it is astonishing that the church of Rennes-Le-Château doesn't possess any of it. It is in this church that Bérenger Saunière studied his catechism and made his communions. It is moving to think that it is maybe thanks to this church that he felt the call of the Faith.
What we notice, while arriving on this place, is an astonishing fountain of important measurements. It is decorated with three fish mythological recrachant the water of their mouth. In its center, a sort of small obelisk sends back water under the shape of an elegant throw.
All around, the place is decorated many plane trees aged with several hundreds of years. A friend told to me, there is little: "while seeing them, I cannot stop from thinking that Saunière, being small, often has the to make pee against these trees ". She will recognize herself. I kiss it in a friendly way.

You are right, it is about Rennes-Le-Château. One perfectly recognizes well the silhouette of the Tower Magdala, the church and the castle of the Hautpouls..
Decidedly, dice his most tender childhood the eyes of Bérenger Saunière always turned toward this village that was going to upset his life.
