The contemporaries of
Bérenger Saunière

It is interesting to make a point on the different contemporary of Bérenger Saunière that have touch closely or from afar his history. This list, non exhaustive, will permit a brief survey of each..

Marie Denarnaud :

Marie is one of the characters key of the Rennes-Le-Château enigma. She is born August 12, 1868. When she went back to the service of Bérenger Saunière shet was not twenty years old! Yet she possessed a profession since she was hat.t is to her name that Bérenger Saunière bought all lands of which he made the acquirement. Not only the lands belonged to him, but besides Bérenger Saunière made of Marie Denarnaud her only and unique universal heir

Marie Denarnaud en 1941
I. he is with her that it searched the church during long evenings and long nights. He is again with her that he searched the cemetery. Event that even went as far as provoking quick reactions on behalf of the City council! For much Marie was more that a simple maid for Bérenger Saunière; this affirmation was never really proved, but the villagers of the time dealt the topic with the smile.
Marie Denarnaud jeune

However that may be, Marie vowed a true cult in Bérenger Saunière after his death, surrendering morning and evening on his tomb whatever is the state of the time. He/it is true that this fidelity is exceptional. Although solicited of all part, she only accepted the offer of the family Corbu that bought him in life the whole domain that she had inherited the abbot. The family Corbu took care of her until the end of hers days, integrating it literally to the family's life. The legend wants that just before dying, in 1953, it tempts to speak and to deliver a message in Christmas Corbu that stayed it up, but alas in a breath, it died out carrying away with it her fabulous secret and the one of Bérenger Saunière. One can say with certainty that it is to this precise moment that the AFFAIR OF RENNES-LE-CHATEAU.Il is obvious that it knew the major part of the secret of Bérenger Saunière. She had the habit to tell those that wanted to hear it that: "the inhabitants of Rennes-Le-Château walk on a treasure! There is what to feed the village during more of hundred years."

L'abbé Boudet :
La carte d'Edmond Boudet accompagnat le livre "La vraie langue Celtique" de Henri Boudet

There is an enigmatic character! One feels it present all along this enigma. But one never sees it appearing to the first or the second plan. Only his work "The true language Celtic" challenges us directly. It is true that this work has what to astonish since the axiom of this work is to express that all languages come down from the English and this since the origins. It is obvious that Bérenger Saunière frequented it but what is surprising is this note that he wrote a short time in his notebook after he discovered the tomb in the church September 21, 1891. Indeed, September 29 he writes: "Seen vicar of Névian at Gélis. At Career seen Cros and Secret.". It is therefore obvious that to the moment where he discovered a secret he informed some of the priests friends but not Boudet! In any case nothing can allow us to think it. How can one be certain of the direct relations of Bérenger Saunière and Henri Boudet? A writer, in his novel, Jean-Michel Thibault, made take out again this relational between the two priests, is this he that is in the truth? For much Bérenger Saunière would be the secular arm of the business and Boudet would be the thinking head. Is one some really so on? On the other hand, in his work "The true Language Celtic", Boudet, in the beginning of the book, site the different cities of France possessing in their name the term "Rennes." Him the sites all, except a village: Rennes-Le-Château! How would he be able to it to have forgotten? Must one see in this mistake the one that certain one wanted to assign to Bérenger Saunière also as the pillar upside-down and other astonish differences? Is this the common point of the two priests? Is this by this detail that Boudet have wish to put the index so on the importance of this village close to Rennes-Les-Bains?

 L'abbé Gélis :

Le presbytère de Coustaussa où fut assassiné l'abbé Gélis

Antoine Gélis is born in 1827 and die in the night of October 31 to the 1 er November 1897 in the presbytery of Coustaussa. This priest reputed like being apprehensive and worried seems to have been one of the friends the more close to Bérenger Saunière. As we could see it above, he was probably one of the first people that Bérenger Saunière informed its discovery. To the early access, Antoine Gélis seems to be an unobtrusive character and of second plan but it only until his death. Indeed, his death is somewhat exceptional for this region of Aude to this time. He was murdered. This murder has been perpetrated in a relatively horrible way. The most extraordinary is that it seems that the mobile was not the flight or of the less the flight of value. During the investigation the police recovered in the drawers of the sums of money import to which the thieves were not interested even. Only a bag made of leather was forced. According to the police analysis, the thieves would possibly have searched for some documents. But whom? With the progression of the investigation, the authorities discovered that Antoine Gélis was to the head of a true fortune. But from where it could come? And yet it nearly lived poorly and for certain he passed for a miser. The police discovered her stretched out body in the kitchen bathing enough in an of blood..
He had the smashed skull. Different indications proved that he was attached on a chair and tortured. A shock rapes was carried to his/her head the dragging in the death. His death noted, the murderer lengthened it on soil the hands crossed on the chest all as a recumbent figure. This position left the authorities of the time in the puzzlement. Close to him a cardboard of paper to cigarette of the mark "The Czar" bathed in blood. One of the leaves had left from it and someone had taken care to write the following sentence there: ANGELINA VIVA." One was ever known really what it wanted to say. The nephew of Antoine Gélis was charged of his uncle's murder but his innocence was proven quickly. Only a track drew itself orienting the authorities toward rovers on which no one ever put the hand. This crime was never clarified. We know that Bérenger Saunière and Henry Boudet attended the funerals of their unhappy friend. The tomb of Gélis presents an interesting particularity, it is not in the same sense that the other tombs of the cemetery but especially it is oriented toward the village of Rennes-Le-Château. Would it be possible that Bérenger Saunière is confided of the documents in Antoine Gélis and that of the individuals having learned it wished to procure themselves them? We know that Bérenger Saunière would have undergone the pressures that always were not verbal. Is one able there to see a tie with the murder of Gélis? It is certain that Antoine Gélis was probably implied more in the enigma of Rennes-Le-Château that one thinks it. One knows that Bérenger Saunière had probably made him some confidences. Did have him maybe he confided of the documents? And then of what manner he was himself to procure this fortune that was recovered at home ?

L'abbé Bigou
He was the confessor of Marie of Négri of Able. One supposes that it is his that she confided the secret of the Hautpouls, that would be at the origin of the history of Rennes-Le-Château. It is again this priest who would have engraved the marchioness's funerary stone at which Bérenger Saunière would have worked away so much. Certain think that it was he that hid the documents in the pillar of the Rennes-Le-Château church Saint-Marie Madeleine That is again he that would have placed the tile of the knights, face against earth, before the altar. It is likely that hetransmitted his secret to the vicar of Rennes-the-baths, Jean Vie..

L'abbé Cros
We have little thing on this priest except that het was probably one of the confidants of Bérenger Saunière. Indeed, a short time after the discovery of a tomb within the Saint-Marie-Madeleine church, he was going to see it. It is obvious that what Bérenger Saunière found is bound at the church. Otherwise, why meet some priests essentially: Gelis, Cros and the vicar of Névian?

 Monseigneur Billard

It is nearly certain that he knew his subordinate's projects and that anything, in the research and the works of Bérenger Saunière, was unknown to him. For certain, it would be Eminence Billiards who have mandate Bérenger Saunière to accomplish this task, making of the priest the simple secular arm of a certain college of the official church. He inaugurated the gardens and the church in company of the abbot. He cannot notice the "anomalies" create by his priest in his constructions and restorations. In this case? Why he doesn't have anything says ?

Monseigneur de Beauséjour

Monseigneur de Beauséjour

He was the successor of Eminence Billiards in the bishopric of Carcassonne. This succesorat was not in the interest of Bérenger Saunière. Indeed, before the ostentatious life of the Rennes-Le-Château priest, Eminence of Beauséjour asked him for the accounts and explanations. Bérenger Saunière refused to provide the least explanation as for his life style definitely. It didn't make more of them to anger a few more the bishop of Carcassonne. Before the priest's attitude, him him attempt a suit for traffic of Mass. This suit was only a pretext to be able to see clearer in the abbot's ostentatious life. Eminence of Beauséjour even confided in particular that "this accusation of Mass traffic is illusory and that it doesn't have any interest." However that may be, Bérenger Saunière didn't give up and held head to his bishop. The bishop, tired of the years of suit, asked for a last time to Bérenger Saunière of the explanations. And a last time Bérenger Saunière refused. Before this reaction, the authorities of the church took the decision to suspend Bérenger Saunière of his ministerial functions. This decision brought the priest of Rennes-Le-Château completely down. From there, his attitude altered and his problems of health went while intensifying.

La Comtesse et le Comte de Chambord

We essentially know these characters in the history of Rennes-Le-Château by the slant of the Countess of Chambord that made a grant of 1000 F to Bérenger current Saunière 1885. This last died lasted the year 1886. His husband has, during one time, played an important place on the stage politicizes French. The count of Chambord was recognized like being the only pretender in the throne of France. Even the Count of Paris recognized it like Tel. He married in 1846 archduchess Marie-Thérèse of Modena. It is her that made the grant to Bérenger Saunière. After an irretrievable political mistake he must give up his projects of reconquest of the throne. He died in 1883.

With the family of Chambord France lost its deniers hopes of monarchy. It is very surprising that the woman of such a character is interested in a priest of the high Razès. One can suppose that the stand of Bérenger Saunière during the election campaign of 1885, dragging him a suspension of his treatment, made react the Countess of seeing Chambord in Bérenger Saunière a partisan supporter of the monarchical reason. Only, a support of Eminence Billiards allowed the priest to ascertain the incomes in the waiting of a return in "grace" by the Council of Factory

Marie de Négri d'Able

Pierre tombale de Marie de Négri d'Ables, marquise de Hautpoul

We can say that it is by Marie of Négri of Able packs down Hautpoul that history enters in the business of Rennes-Le-Château. The antecedence of the family of Hautpoul is for us the hyphen until the ancient Rhédae. On the other hand, we know, with certainty, that Bérenger Saunière especially worked away at this woman's tomb. It seems that he would be to endeavor to erase the funerary stone so that no one can read the epitaph there. Since numerous years, one presents us an epitaph that would be the one of the tomb of the lady of Hautpoul. Alas, nothing us guarantee of its authenticity. A certain Stublein would have recopied this last of the years before the priest of Rennes-Le-Château decides to destroy it. Alas, it seems that this author's book, "The stones of the high Languedoc", never existed …

Rousset et Babou
These two characters are the two workers who have, in company of Bérenger Saunière, done works in the church for the replacement of the altar. These are them also that raised the famous tile of the knights and that found "Oule" it in which several gold currencies were hidden. Taking advantage of the few of culture of the two workers, Bérenger Saunière deceived them while telling to them that these pieces were of the medals of Lourdes, guaranteeing themselves thus a certain confidentiality on this discovery

 Alexandrine Marrot

When, in 1885, Bérenger Saunière arrived in its new parish, he discovered his presbytery in a pitiable state. Accepting the circumstances, he understood quickly that he was impossible to him to lodge there. It is whereas inhabitants of the village directed it toward Alexandrine Marrot. She sheltered it several months, the time that he undertakes some repairs in order to return the habitable presbytery. In his book "The gold of the Devil" Jean-Michel Thibault makes a description, certainly romanticized, but realist of the event. It would be nice to know if this Alexandrine Marrot is the ascending of Mr. Marrot, present secretary of the association of Rhédae.

Le carillonneur Captier
History returns that Captier, the carillonneur, was the one that found, close to the reversed baluster, a vial containing the documents, that would be the famous parchments for certain. Before the event, he brought his find to the priest. There, again, the abbot's reaction, some carillonneur seems the strangest, since it affirmed to him that these documents were without importance. The descendant returns that his ancestor had custom to say: "If abbot Saunière became so rich that is thanks to me!". One can suppose easily that this history has to leave it to him a bitter taste.

 Fleuri
This craftsman is the one that created, to the demand of Bérenger Saunière, the different stained glass windows of Xl'église Saint-Marie-Madeleine. One can, at the time of one visit of the church, to admire their invoice to the iridescent colors. Several of these stained glass windows made a lot of ink sink also. For certain the blue decors the framing, would be there to recall and indicer the famous blue apples of the sentence found in the second parchment.

 Giscard
This character doesn't have anything to see with the modern politician. It is necessary to know that this name is spilled very in the southwest of France. Giscard was the one that created all the statuary of the Saint-Marie-Madeleine church. He also manufactured the famous path of cross to the identical of the one that he delivered for the path of cross of pilgrimage of Rocamadour in the Lot. It is true that some stations of this path defer of the one Rocamadour. It is interesting to notice that this enterprise always exists on Toulouse.

 Emma Calvé

La cantatrice Emma Calvé

Emma Calvé of Roquer, of her true name, is born in Decazeville, in the Aveyron, in 1858 and died in 1942 in Millau. For many she was the muse of Bérenger Saunière who would have met it at the time of one of his journeys in Paris. Of knowledge, he would have become intimate, certain won't hesitate to see in her the mistress of Bérenger Saunière. It is true that some witnesses brought back to have heard, at the time of the ostentatious receipts organized by the abbot, the powerful and warbling voice of an opera singer. In his novel, "the gold of the devil", Jean-Michel Thibault describes us a tumultuous and passionate relation between the priest and the singer. She had a sumptuous career. She starts in Brussels in 1882 and appears immediately in Paris, then in the Scala of Milan in 1887 and sing regularly in London in presence of Queen Victoria. She sings in New-York, Go up-Carlo and in a lot of other prestigious places. She is recognized like a Carmen out pair. She wrote her memorials in 1940 under the title "Under all heaven, I sang." She bought the castle of Cabrières, close to Millau, where she spent her last years.

 Elisabeth de Négri d'Able
Elisabeth of Négri of Able is the girl of Marie of Négri of Able. To the death of this last she inherits her mother's goods and takes the title of Miss of Rennes. Several reverses of fortune entail a seizure of her goods. An auction is organized and her goods are assigned to her former maid and her husband who are Julie Avignon and her husband Michel Captier.

 Le curé Rivière

This priest was the one that had the task, he seems difficult, to receive the last confession of Bérenger Saunière. This confession lasted certain a very long time and the young cleaned of Espérazza came from it out again completely upset. He didn't give the last sacraments while alive to Bérenger Saunière. Makes extremely rare and serious in opposition to a priest. He came back after his death to bless it. River, of after certain, sank six months later in the madness. What could therefore reveal Bérenger Saunière to this young priest? No one knows it but it must be terrifying for his understanding and his/her/its culture.
