The"secret" of
Bérenger Saunière

Some days after the" discovery of a tomb ", abbot Saunière notes in his notebook-newspaper to the date of September 29, 1891" Seen vicar of Névian - At Gélis - At Career - Seen Cros and Secret "

It is therefore obvious for these commentators that the vicar of Rennes-Le-Chateau discovered a secret.
Yet in 1990, Jean-Jacques Bedu brings a different explanation that could separate the first (4) definitely. Indeed, this author presents a list of priests established by abbot Saunière where, to the third line, is registered the sentence "Guilhem Secret of the bishopric." Guilhem being effectively at the time secretary of the bishopric where the vicar consigns this sentence, it is the incontestable proof that "Secret" is "Secretary's" abbreviation.
Vinciane Dennis shares, her also, this position and confirm: "Secret is here, of irrefutable manner, "Secretary's" abbreviation: no allusion to a secret shared by Saunière with his colleagues! " (5)
For the faithful enthusiasts of the first hour, this new fact doesn't constitute a proof susceptible to make change them of opinions and two versions cohabit henceforth sympathetically.
However, nor the defenders of the theory "Secret" for "Secretary", nor the partisans of a "Secret" simply, don't appear to have noticed, while taking knowledge of the two documents, that "Secret of the bishopric" possesses an accent whereas "Seen Cros and Secret" is deprived some.

Finally, each could be right. "Secrét" would be really secretary's abbreviation, and "Secret", an allusion to the one discovered and kept by Bérenger Saunière to that his friend abbot Rouanet, cleaned of Bagès, written in July 1910" You had money, it doesn't belong to anybody to pierce the secret that you keep, you spent it as it pleased you, it only looks at you. " (6).
